S.P.G. proudly presents Sofia Tolis first solo exhibition at the gallery. But why dost thou shriek so loud? Artist and poet Sofia Tolis work often revolve around personal and private experiences. In previous work she has explored existential issues such as the relationship between languages and human aging, sexuality and religious fundamentalism. Whether she works with text-based art, photographs, installations or sculptures made by textile, she truly strives to uncover the essence of her subjects. Her ambition is to combine and reconcile the different means of expression without any euphemisms. The starting point of the exhibition But why dost thou shriek so loud? is nostalgia, and deals with a painful longing for a father figure [sic, a painful homesickness] which was characterized by the death of Tolis Greek father recently. Pegasus, the winged horse in Greek mythology associated with poetic inspiration since ancient times, constitutes the foundation everything revolves around in a heaven somewhere between dream and reality. Sofia Tolis (b.1968) was educated at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm 1993-1999 and the Nordic Writer’s School, Biskops Arnö 1990-1991 and 2002-2003. She has exhibited her work at various spaces such as Skulpturens Hus in Stockholm and Röda Sten in Gothenburg Her poetry has been published in literary journals such as OEI, Lyrikvännen and Ordfront Magasin. |
